Claude vs. ChatGPT: Best AI for Coding 2026
AI-assisted coding has gone from experiment to everyday tool remarkably quickly. The two dominant assistants — Claude by Anthropic and ChatGPT by OpenAI — are both powerful, but not equal. Anyone who works with both daily quickly realizes: for most coding tasks, Claude has the edge.
In this article, I’ll explain why — and when ChatGPT is still the better choice.
Context: What Are We Comparing?
I use AI tools daily for:
- Power Automate expressions, conditions, and JSON transformations
- Office Scripts and JavaScript for Excel automation
- Power FX formulas in Canvas Apps
- PowerShell scripts for administrative tasks
- Occasionally Python for data processing
This comparison isn’t a generic “who writes better React code” test — it’s from the perspective of an automation professional working in the Microsoft ecosystem.
What Claude Does Better
1. Understanding complex, multi-step requirements
Claude understands complex, nested requirements better and maintains context longer. When I describe a Power Automate flow in natural language — with multiple conditions, exceptions, and edge cases — Claude typically delivers a clean, immediately usable solution.
ChatGPT tends to lose track of things or over-simplify when dealing with long, multi-step tasks.
2. Code quality and explanations
Claude explains generated code more clearly and proactively flags potential issues. With Office Scripts, for example, Claude keeps TypeScript types clean and handles edge cases (empty arrays, null values) without being asked — a sign of genuine code quality awareness.
3. Long context — a real advantage
Claude’s context window is large enough to process complete Power Automate flow definitions in JSON format. That means I can paste an entire flow export and ask Claude why a particular step isn’t working. This saves enormous amounts of debugging time.
4. Honesty about uncertainty
Claude hallucinates less and more frequently admits when it’s unsure about an API or connector. In automation work, this is invaluable — a wrong connector name in a production environment costs real time.
What ChatGPT Does Better
Fairness matters — ChatGPT has genuine strengths:
1. Broad general knowledge and ecosystem
ChatGPT has a wider footprint through its plugin ecosystem and integration with tools like GitHub Copilot. For general web development, Python scripting, or when I need a quick Stack Overflow-style result, ChatGPT is often sufficient.
2. Image analysis and DALL-E
When it comes to images — analysing screenshots, describing diagrams, creating UI mockups — ChatGPT with DALL-E 3 has a clear advantage.
3. Code Interpreter / Advanced Data Analysis
The built-in Python execution environment in ChatGPT (Code Interpreter) is practical for quick data analyses. Upload a CSV and get directly visualized results — useful and time-saving.
Head-to-Head Comparison
| Criterion | Claude | ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|
| Complex code generation | ✅ Better | Good |
| Context handling (long prompts) | ✅ Better | Limited |
| Hallucinations | ✅ Fewer | More |
| General knowledge | Good | ✅ Better |
| Image analysis / generation | Limited | ✅ Better |
| Code Interpreter (Python execution) | No | ✅ Yes |
| Power Automate / M365 ecosystem | ✅ Better | Good |
GitHub Copilot — the Third Option
Anyone working directly in VS Code or another editor shouldn’t overlook GitHub Copilot. Copilot isn’t the same as a chat assistant — it’s optimized for inline code completion. For developers who write a lot of code daily, it may be the most valuable of the three tools.
Copilot now also uses Claude models (among others), which has further improved its quality.
My Verdict
For use in the Microsoft 365 and automation space, Claude is my clear recommendation. The combination of deep context understanding, clean code quality, and honest answers makes it the most reliable tool for complex automation work.
ChatGPT remains good for general questions, quick Python analysis, and anything image-related. For serious coding, however, I’d choose Claude — not just as a personal opinion, but as a conclusion drawn from daily practice.
