Power Platform 2026: Key Features & Updates
Microsoft is advancing the Power Platform at a breathtaking pace. If you use the platform professionally, it’s hard to keep up with all the new developments. In this article I summarize the most important features that matter for Power Automate and Power Apps in 2026.
Power Automate: AI Agents as a Game Changer
The biggest leap in 2026: autonomous AI agents in Power Automate. Microsoft has deeply integrated the agentic architecture into the flow builder. Instead of classic “if-then” logic, flows can now make decisions independently, understand context, and handle multi-step tasks without manual intervention.
What this means in practice:
- An agent can not only forward incoming emails but also understand their content, categorize them, and draft the appropriate reply
- Approval processes can be pre-processed by the agent — it gathers all necessary information before a human makes the final decision
- Exception handling: the agent recognizes unexpected situations and finds a solution itself instead of interrupting the flow
Copilot in Power Automate: Flow Creation by Voice
The Copilot integration has improved significantly since launch. Today you can tell the flow Copilot in natural language:
“Create a flow that sends a Teams message every Monday to the responsible person for each overdue SharePoint task.”
Copilot generates a complete, ready-to-run flow from this — including all connectors, conditions, and variables. Manual configuration is reduced to a minimum.
New Copilot features in 2026:
- Flow explanation: Copilot explains existing, complex flows in plain language
- Error diagnosis: When a run fails, Copilot analyzes the error and suggests a fix
- Optimization suggestions: Copilot identifies performance issues in existing flows
Desktop Flows (RPA) — A Mature Platform
Power Automate Desktop has evolved into a serious RPA platform. The most important updates:
- AI-powered recorders: The desktop recorder reliably recognizes UI elements even when the target application’s layout changes
- SAP connector: Native SAP connector without UI automation — direct API access to SAP systems
- Improved error handling: Detailed logging and automatic retry strategies
- Unattended runs: Fully automated execution on cloud machines without a local installation
Power Apps: Copilot Studio & Generative AI
Canvas Apps with AI Components
Canvas Apps can now embed AI components directly — without code:
- AI Prompt Builder: Define a prompt in the app that gets populated with form fields and display the result directly in the app
- Intelligent forms: Required fields are dynamically shown or hidden based on already entered data
- Natural language filter: End users can filter data tables using free text (“Show me all orders from Vienna in the last quarter”)
Model-Driven Apps: Copilot as Standard
In Model-Driven Apps (Dataverse-based), Copilot is now enabled by default. Users can:
- Create and edit records via voice input
- Retrieve summaries of customer histories
- Get next-action recommendations based on CRM data
Power Apps Mobile — Improved Offline Capability
The offline capability of mobile apps has been fundamentally rebuilt. Complex data synchronization now runs in the background, and conflicts are resolved automatically.
Process Mining: Identify Automation Potential
Power Automate Process Mining has reached mainstream adoption. The tool analyzes your existing systems (ERP, CRM, SharePoint logs) and automatically shows:
- Which processes cause the most manual work
- Where deviations from the target process occur
- Which automations would deliver the highest ROI
New in 2026: Integration with Copilot — Process Mining directly suggests concrete Power Automate flows that address the identified weaknesses.
My Conclusion
The Power Platform in 2026 is no longer a “low-code playground” — it’s a serious enterprise platform that, with AI agents and Copilot integration, takes on tasks that previously required developers or expensive specialized software.
Especially for mid-sized companies without in-house software development, the Power Platform offers enormous potential. The key is identifying the right use cases and introducing the platform professionally.
